Let’s talk overpriced glasses.
At 51, my eyesight isn’t what it used to be. Hasn’t been for about ten years now, really, and gets a little worse every year. Day to day life I’m fine, but like most folks my age, I wear readers when reading, and I get new computer glasses from Lenscrafters every two years. They cost about $300. This time, my lens cracked badly after 10 months (and I’m gentle with them – these were faulty lenses). Lenscrafters said “oh well, that happens sometimes”. And no, they wouldn’t help me – not even a discount on a new pair.
Screw that.
I got a new exam / prescription, and then went online to coastal.com. Got 2 pairs for $165 (total.) Twice the glasses for prettymuch half the price. Got them in about a week, and they fit/work great. Blue light coating and all.
By the way, this is my “just went to the gym” look
But seriously, why is Lenscrafters charging $300 for a pair, when the online store is charging approximately one fourth the price? I actually asked them. They said “our service is better, and you can return them”. Oh really? My lens cracks ten months in, and not only wouldn’t you take them back, you wouldn’t even give me a discount on a new pair… Is this the stellar service you are referring to? They didn’t have a good answer for me. Seriously – the guy just shrugged. Ok then.
I’m not one to shop on price, and I’ll pay for quality and good service. But the internet has pulled the curtain back on several industries that just gouged people for years, glasses being one of them. I’m guessing Lenscrafters won’t be around in ten years. No big loss.
