Just a quick update on “prices on a website”.I’ve always struggled with this. When I put prices on my quote page, the overall number of conversions (contacts) drops. Fairly sharply, in fact (which is to be expected). But, I spend waaaaay less time e-mailing / conversing with people who never would have hired me, which is good (conversing w/ potential clients takes time – time I can spend more productively.) But the “drop” has always bothered me. Especially in the short-term (it’s unnerving going from ten contacts a day to three.)
Anyway, I put “general” prices up about six months ago (which I think is a fair test.) And I gritted my teeth in trying to overcome the fear of the dreaded “contact drop”. The overall result is I am very pleased. Truthfully, I still get the same amount of “good” contacts that I had previously, and far less of the bad ones. Plus, I feel my overall quality of client has actually gone *up*. The people who think writing is important seem to like the fact that I am “not cheap”.
Not saying this works for every business. But for a professional service like mine, it has indeed been a good thing. I get fewer contacts now (two thirds less, really), but the ones that DO reach out are very interested.
Dan – thanks for the insight from experience. As always, very helpful.
