How much is your professional writing??

Published 08-01-2008 , 7:52 PM

Here's the backstory: I was told in an e-mail that my price for writing was "double that of your competition".

Here's my response. I think it sums up my feelings pretty well:

*****
Hi Karen,

Well, it depends on the competition, I suppose. I only consider a few writers out there as real competition (I even link to one of them) - most charge in the neighborhood of $xxx-$xxx a page for web copy, which is what I typically charge. Is there cheaper? Yes, absolutely. Do they have my level of website, expertise, and credentials? Probably not.

I've seen half a million writers with websites that are little more than a list of services, and a price. And that's fine, but we're not talking apples to apples, either. I've been doing this a long time, have checkable references, am a member of the BBB, have a stellar DnB rating, and am on the shelf in your local bookstore's business section (with a second book on web writing and marketing out in November.) That says something.

I tell people all the time - *read* our sites - and hire whom you feel is the best writer. Web business is too important to be left with anything but the best - if one writer can deliver a 1% better conversion, he or she more than justified their price and paid for themselves.

To be honest, 26 pages of web copy for an industry like yours is not a simple task. If someone wants to do that for $xxx to $xxx a page, well, I definitely can't (and won't) compete with that. But that's fine, I'm plenty busy, and I'm sure the lower priced ones are as well (and I'm sure many of them are fine writers). I also understand sometimes budgets must rule, and that's ok. There's room for every price point.

I just wanted to comment on the pricing and let you know why. Best of luck whichever way you go :)

This blog software is a serious piece of @#$%

Published 08-01-2008 , 8:07 PM

I'm sorry, but this blog software sucks. There's no nice way to say it - It just sucks. I'm at my breaking point.

Listen fellas, it's friggen 2008. I should be able to insert a break <BR> without any issue, ok?? I shouldn't have to fight with a friggen post for a half an hour to get it to look decent. There's simply no excuse. I've been dealing with this for over a year - if you want to offer a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) app, make it truly WYSIWYG, ok?? Don't make it half ass (like it is now).

I'll see you over at Blogspot soon, where they have their shit together.

Sorry for the attitude, but I cannot stand substandard work. Do it right, or don't do it at all. And this has nothing to do with the upgraded blog software - the same @#$% from a year ago is still here (like it can't recognize a simple "enter" as a break when you paste something into it.)
