How much is your professional writing??

Here's the backstory: I was told in an e-mail that my price for writing was "double that of your competition".
Here's my response. I think it sums up my feelings pretty well:

Hi Karen, Well, it depends on the competition, I suppose. I only consider a few writers out there as real competition (I even link to one of them) - most charge in the neighborhood of $xxx-$xxx a page for web copy, which is what I typically charge. Is there cheaper? Yes, absolutely. Do they have my level of website, expertise, and credentials? Probably not.
I've seen half a million writers with websites that are little more than a list of services, and a price. And that's fine, but we're not talking apples to apples, either. I've been doing this a long time, have checkable references, am a member of the BBB, have a stellar DnB rating, and am on the shelf in your local bookstore's business section (with a second book on web writing and marketing out in November.) That says something. I tell people all the time - *read* our sites - and hire whom you feel is the best writer. Web business is too important to be left with anything but the best - if one writer can deliver a 1% better conversion, he or she more than justified their price and paid for themselves.
To be honest, 26 pages of web copy for an industry like yours is not a simple task. If someone wants to do that for $xxx to $xxx a page, well, I definitely can't (and won't) compete with that. But that's fine, I'm plenty busy, and I'm sure the lower priced ones are as well (and I'm sure many of them are fine writers). I also understand sometimes budgets must rule, and that's ok. There's room for every price point. I just wanted to comment on the pricing and let you know why. Best of luck whichever way you go :)
