I'm writing a book!

It's true - I'm writing a book about starting, running, and marketing a home-based / small business.

The book is for anyone who owns (or wants to start) a business based out of their home. Meaning perhaps a business like mine (where the world is your customer), or even a local services type business like a contractor, daycare, computer consultant, etc.

It's straight, non-nonsense talk about the ups and downs of business ownership. If you like my website, you're going to love this book.

At this writing, my publisher's plan is for it to hit bookstores in Spring 2007.

So, what makes this book special?

The book is going to be a bit different in tone and style from other books about running a business (you didn't think I'd write a run of the mill book, did you?)

It's different because I won't spend page after page on boring, pointless things like discussing nine different types of fax machines or how to write a business plan (zzzz.) Nor will I be advising people useless things like "gee, you can start a coupon-clipping business, or start a shopping service" (apparently, from the titles on the shelves now, there's big money in coupons and shopping... who knew?)

Instead, I'll talk about the things that matter. Such as:

  • How to pick a good business name and get it off the ground.

  • All kinds of useful motivational stuff, much of it rather blunt in nature (in other words, things others are probably afraid to tell you.)

  • Hidden markets you know nothing about.

  • Why you won't get outside funding and what to do about it.

  • Advertising and marketing your business, whether your audience is local or national.

  • I'll discuss things nobody else talks about, like how to get your spouse to back your business idea, and how to make sure you are charging the right price for your services.

  • The real perils of working from home.

  • How a stupid habit like smoking will cost you business, and a million other little things like this (Ok, not really a million. But a lot. More than I cared to count.)

  • Tons of nuts and bolts tidbits I've learned about running a successful business, from handling taxes the right way to using your forms to help you get more business to keeping an e-mail list to how to advertise on the internet. And more!

  • And, of course, there will probably be some writing stuff too - I can't help it.
Plus, it's all written in that Clear-Writing style that everyone loves. It'll make you laugh, and it'll make you... well, it probably won't make you cry. Unless, of course, somebody strikes you across the face with it in anger. But even then, since the book is softcover, I suppose it would depend on the strength of the person doing the striking, and if you were ready for the blow or... oh, nevermind. Hopefully, this will not apply to you.

But the bottom line is, it'll help every businessperson who reads it.
