About Me
I'm a professional business writer, marketing consultant, and author. I work for myself out of my home office, and companies worldwide hire me for writing and marketing projects of all kinds. Suffice to say, if it involves writing, sales, marketing, or increasing business, I can probably help, no matter how large or how small your business is.
I also wrote a book about starting, running, and marketing a home business - it's in your bookstores now (I'm also starting another one on writing. Target publish date is late 2008 or early 2009)
As far as personal stuff, I have been happily married to my wife Maryellen for eight years (we married in Vegas a month after meeting.) We don't (and won't) have any kids, but we do have a dog and a cat. .
Interests
Many businesspeople would "frown" upon putting interests and favorite movies and such here... I say that's a silly attitude.
Part of the problem with a lot of businesspeople today is they are WAY too stuffy and worry far too much about perception. They worry so much about it that they become plain vanilla.
Listen - perception
does matter to a point. You won't see me wear a "Work Sucks" T-Shirt to a client meeting. But there are worse things than listing your interests in the "profile" section of your business blog (of course this assumes your interests aren't things like setting people on fire or worshiping at the altar of Beelzebub. You may want to keep those to yourself.)
But I'm not concerned because my interests are far more pedestrian - and you are welcome to view them if you so choose. I count the following as interests of mine: My wife and our happy homelife; writing; business marketing (yes
this is really an interest); movies (horror in particular); owls; gaming; computers and technology; history (I like all history
but have a heightened interest in the US Civil War); driving my truck (2005 Nissan Frontier 4x4); using my tools; and working on my house.
I'm also a pretty big sports fan, and have been playing fantasy football the past few years (won my league this past year.)
Favorite Movies
I love movies and consider myself a film buff. So I have way too many "favorites" to list. My tastes run the full gamut of film genres and styles. I like a little bit of everything: silent classics like
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and
Metropolis; perennial critic favorites like
Citizen Kane and
Taxi Driver; "Highbrow" stuff like
The Seventh Seal and
Solaris; Musicals like
Singin' in the Rain and
1776; and even schlocky films like
Roadhouse and
Plan 9. I'm also a big MST3K fan.
Favorite Books
Just about any historical non-fiction book will suffice. Writers I like include Dave Barry; Andy Rooney; and Thomas Paine (yes the "Common Sense" guy.) To be honest, I'm a fan of several of the "Founding Fathers". Read the letters that Jefferson and Adams wrote... those guys could just flat-out write.
About This Blog
I'm writing this blog for two reasons: I love to write, and I love writing about business. However, I am NOT writing this blog to put up soft, sappy articles that offer little more than
"Gee, it's Halloween. Time to take a look at your business and clean out the cobwebs." *groan*...You know what that is, don't you? That's someone saying "Marketing people say I should have a blog on my website, so I will."
I'll put it to you this way - if I don't have a blog good enough for someone to bookmark because it's interesting (and fun) to read, then I don't want to have one.
On that vein, (and you've probably assumed) I'm not just going to talk about business. I can't think of anything more boring than one business article after another. So I'll definitely talk about other stuff. Check back often.
