Business Writing, Website Writing, and Other Writing Services by a Professional Writer

A Backstage Pass

By Dan Furman

I've been asked by a few people just how a business writer works. I'll give you some insight:

  • I get about 15 non-spam business e-mails a day. I answer every one (except those where the sender isn't expecting an answer).

  • Most days, I'll send out one or two proposals to potential clients.

  • Of course, I write. Most of my day is spent in front of the computer, tapping keys.

  • I usually take on three to five projects at any given time. One of them is usually "big" (like 50 pages plus). I like working this way as it keeps my mind fresh. Nothing is worse than writing for five days about one type of widget and thinking "I'm TIRED of widgets". Having multiple projects going makes it so I never get burned out. I'm busy, but not overwhelmed. This allows you to get my best work.

  • I do a lot of thinking. If I'm writing you a page, I'll usually bang it out fairly quick. Then I'll stare at it for awhile. Then I'll make some changes. Then I'll put it away, sometimes for a day. Then I return and make more changes. By the time you see a page of writing, I've likely visited it multiple times.

  • I almost always have background music on when I work. 90% of the time, it's classical music or jazz. I like working to this type of music, as it's very non-intrusive. I like all kinds of music, but the last thing I want when I'm writing is my mind thinking "oooh, I love this song".

  • I work for myself, so it's hard to say where "work" and "life" separate. This is a blessing and a curse. Yea, I can knock off and go shopping on Tuesday afternoon. I also sit here at 10pm, writing for clients. Indeed, I'm writing this at 11:30pm, Jan 2, 2005. A Sunday night. I also just touched up a page I'll send a client tomorrow. I've been doing this for years, and I work harder for myself (and you) than I have at any regular job I've held.

  • That's because I simply love what I do. I think it shows. Hopefully, you'll let me prove it to you.
